This week included the conclusion of April's trading month, which marked the first down month of the year for all three major market averages. Indeed, some recent earnings reports have raised doubts about the economy, with brands from McDonald's and Starbucks evidencing signs of strain among consumers. While no new inflation numbers are scheduled for release next week, investors will see reports on March wholesale inventories, March consumer credit and May consumer sentiment from the University of Michigan. Morgan Stanley Investment Management's Aaron Dunn says the "next big bottleneck" for the hyperscalers — which are doing a lot of the cloud computing for AI applications — is either power or fiber. We are shifting our industrial exposure Tuesday afternoon by selling Emerson Electric on its slight gain and buying Eaton on today's dip. Historically when the market is overbought, we are hesitant about putting new money to work because an overbought market suggests the market has run up too far too fast and needs to digest gains. But selling one stock to buy another else keeps us cash neutral. We realize a loss of about 8% on Emerson stock purchased in December 2022. Stocks rallied hard on Tuesday after new inflation data signaled a possible end to the Federal Reserve's rate-hiking campaign. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped nearly 500 points after the closely watched consumer price index (CPI) reading for October came in flat, softer than economists' estimate of 0.1% growth month over month. Wall Street took the news as a sign that inflation was coming down enough for the central bank to stop raising interest rates. Barring a surprise rebound in inflation, rates seem to have peaked and the "soft landing" for the economy is still in play. We like to buy stocks when the market is oversold, and sell stocks when there is too much buying.

Would-be acquirors of Hollysys include the company’s own management, a buyout firm and a consortium including Chinese state-owned investors. The segment constitutes 65% of Hollysys’ top line, which has risen by over 50% from three years ago. The Hollysys affair suggests shareholders can expect a little bit more as Chinese companies bid farewell to the United States. The $26 per share cash offer represents a 26% premium to the closing price on Nov. 3.
